Classes at QACP

QACP offers classes for infants up through age 5 years old in our prekindergarten class, emphasizing social-emotional learning and play-based curriculums – young children learn best through the many stages of play as they develop.

Caregivers, through participation, observation, and parent education, gain skills in supporting their child’s physical, mental, social, and emotional needs.

Infants

The Infant classes at Queen Anne Cooperative Preschool are designed as a supportive, fun, and dynamic learning environment to encourage and enhance this special time for both you and your baby.

Age

Infants under 1 year of age as of August 31 may enroll in the infant class. Note that the child may not attend prior to turning three months.

What you can expect for you and your baby

Children come to class with a parent, grandparent, or other caregiver weekly to engage in a fun, interactive experience. Our teacher facilitates the children’s development and learning community by offering:

  • Age-appropriate classroom, toys, and activities.
  • In infant classes, the baby and caregiver always attend together.
  • Circle time with brain-building songs, movement, and activities.
  • Small and large motor development activities.

Tots 1 & Tots 2

Caregivers and their little ones interact, play, and sing songs while learning simple socialization skills like sharing, taking turns, and experiencing sitting together for circle time. A happy time! A playdate of sorts. The class is set up with varied “work stations” that range from painting, play-dough, a sensory table, and blocks, among others, to make learning and exploration as tactile as possible for this age group of children.

Age

Must be 1 year old by August 31st.

Twos

A time of great cognitive, emotional and social development. Twos can be both a rewarding and a challenging time for children and their caregivers. It’s a time when children process more than they can express. A time of self-recognition, embarrassment, and pride, amongst a myriad of other emotions! As children continue to explore, express and discover, their caregivers have an opportunity to learn and understand with them. Skills such as ways to communicate effectively with their toddlers, ensuring meaningful dialogue, understanding and calm can be learned. Open play, snack and an extended circle time, offer fun opportunities for continued socialization and play-based learning.

Held twice a week for 2 hours each day, the caregivers drop off their children one day. By so doing, children gradually gain the confidence to spend more time at the preschool on their own, thereby gaining the skills to transition to kindergarten.

Age

Must be 2 years old by August 31st.

Threes

A little more “worldly-wise”, with greater vocabulary and sense of self, this class offers fun ways for children to work together in groups through collaborative activities (building, imaginative play, etc.). With two drop-off days, children have the opportunity to learn to be even more independent and rely on trusted adults for assistance. Longer circle time, storytelling, conversations, and following instructions are emphasized. Pre-academic skills, such as counting, spelling, and using scissors, among others, are introduced in addition to a focus on social-emotional skills. This class spends more time exploring our Queen Anne neighborhood as well as taking Field Trips throughout the year.

  • Outdoor Time: The Threes class spends approximately half of their class time outdoors, including walking to the playground for large motor play time, holding class at our neighborhood P-patch, or going on Field Trips.
  • Field Trips: The Threes class takes approximately one field trip per month; recent field trips have included looking for salmon in Piper’s Creek at Carkeek Park, walking to the neighborhood fire station, bringing hygiene kits to the Pike Market Food Bank, and finding (smelling) the Skunk Cabbages growing in Discovery Park.
Age

Must be 3 years old by August 31st.

Pre-K

Children are capable of participating in discussions and decision-making. They are often able to deal with peer confrontations without adult intervention. Their creative play has reached new levels, they are interested in projects that span longer periods of time, and they like sharing new knowledge and skills. Although social development is still our primary goal, there is time spent on more focused pre-academic skill development through patterning, graphing, oral dictation, and group work on letter and sound recognition. As in each preceding class, the art, activity and music levels continue to increase as the children’s interests and abilities develop.

Parent education topics include:

  • Age appropriate guidance and discipline,
  • Age appropriate expectation and developmental milestones,
  • Kindergarten readiness,
  • Parent self-care (Being ready to send them off to school),
  • Cultural awareness,
  • Community resources and involvement
Age

Must be 4 years old by August 31st.
